With summer in full swing, it’s inevitable that we will be hitting the beach. With that in mind, it is important to consider the time we will be spending in the sun and the effects that might have on our health. We’ve brought in our resident grooming expert Pirooz Sarshar, founder of PRZMAN, to help us better navigate those pesky rays produced by the star in the center of our solar system.
Sun Tan. This summer the sun’s rays are stronger than ever. While you may tan quickly, you’re also destroying essential substances that make up your skin, which leads to physical aging. Sun exposure creates a massive attack of free radicals that cause wrinkling, sagging, and damage to the collagen in your body.
The solution: use sunscreen. The result: you will still tan, only you will look better and maintain a youthful foundation for your skin. On your sunscreen bottle you’ll see the letters SPF or Sun Protection Factor. The numbers in front of the SPF letters make it even more confusing. Here’s the best way to understand what SPF means:

Let’s say you’re able to stay in the sun for ten minutes without sunscreen before turning red. When you apply lotion with SPF 15 you multiply ten times fifteen and you’ll be able to stay in the sun for 150 minutes or two-and-a-half hours before you risk turning into a lobster.
Always apply sunscreen thirty minutes before being in the sun so it can be absorbed by the skin and less likely to wash off when sweating or swimming – be sure to deduct half an hour from your reapplication time. In addition, view waterproof and water-resistant sunscreens with skepticism. Most waterproof sunscreens are good for about 80 minutes before needing to be reapplied and water-resistant ones only last about 40 minutes.
Sunburn. Regardless of your skin type, the sun’s UV rays can burn anyone. If you do get sunburnt, here are a few tips to treat it:
Always have an anti-inflammatory cream around. This can help to reduce pain and inflammation.
Apply a wash cloth with cold water. Do this for 20 minutes over each burned area.
Apply aloe vera. You can purchase this at your local pharmacy, or if you’re cool enough to have an aloe plant, cut off a chunk and apply the aloe to damaged areas.
Drink plenty of water. Sunburns will dehydrate your body. If you’re feeling dizzy, clammy, nauseous or extremely thirsty, you should see a doctor immediately.
