Oyster Perpetual Air King

The Air King's remained in Rolex's line up for close to 70 years. Throughout this time span the watch proved to be reliable and elegant, making it a true embodiment of Rolex's mission. The first Air King's were released to commemorate the bravery of RAF pilots who fought in the Battle of Britain. They also released the Air Lion, Air Giant, and Air Tiger, but none of those had the Air King's impact. The Rolex brand and its founder Hans Wilsdorf were renowned for their unparalleled support to the allied troops during the war. Wilsdorf personally took command of the "buy now and pay whenever" program, which allowed POW's to order Rolex timepieces without the burden of having to pay for them immediately.

About the Brand

Hans Wilsdorf and Alfred Davis founded Rolex in London in 1905. The company started as a timepiece distribution company. But it soon became a wristwatch manufacturer after Wilsdorf realized he could manufacture movements that could be worn on the wrist, something unheard of at the time. In 1910 Rolex is awarded the worlds first Swiss Certificate of Chronometric Precision. In 1914 it is awarded the Precision Certificate for its new movements. These awards turned Rolex into a symbol of precision and elegance. A status it maintains to this day.
